Technical Details
This page deals with the technical details which are normally of little interest to anyone. But we thought someone might need to know this so we included it here.
There are four major components to The Racing System:
In addition, we also make use of the registry to store information needed by the application. The settings we use are supplied below.
The application
The application consists of several files plus an executable. These files are installed into the directory
c:\Program Files\The Racing System\DVL Software Limited.
Most of these files have.pbd
as their suffix.The database
The database file is
race.db
and is normally readonly when when the application is not running. This is the file which you should backup most often. If you lose this file, you lose all of your data. If you do have problems with this file, please contact us and we'll see what we can do.The database engine
The Racing System uses Sybase SQL Anywhere as it's database engine. The application communicates with the database engine, and the database engine talks to the database. This is part of the client server architecture around with the application is designed.
The database engine is installed into the directory
c:\SQLAny50\win32
.The ODBC settings
The ODBC settings allow the database engine to know which database to talk to. The application tells the database engine that it wants to talk to the Race database, the engine looks up the details for Race, locates the database, and connects.
Registry Entries
There are several registry settings used by the software.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DVL Software Limited\The Racing System
Person List
On the main data entry screen (Entries->People/Entries), there is a button which activates a list of people who have been entered into the default meeting. This registry setting controls how that list is displayed.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\DVL Software Limited\The Racing System
Database
This registry entry identifies the ODBC entry which the application will use.

The license details (name and license number) are stored here.
